Targhee Pass East

June 24, 2026

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and contractor CK May Excavating, Inc. will start work on the Targhee Pass East Pavement Preservation project on Monday, June 29, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Crews will begin constructing the detour adjacent to the highway with minimal traffic impacts until after the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Fourth of July Holiday Schedule: Work will pause by 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 2 and resume on Monday, July 6.

Throughout the project, motorists should anticipate reduced speeds. Once roadwork begins, travelers should also expect temporary lane closures and potential delays of up to 15 minutes, particularly during paving operations. Additionally, drivers may encounter temporary traffic lights, flaggers, pilot cars, and equipment in the area during active construction.

When traveling through project work zones, slow down, follow traffic control, and watch for workers and equipment.
