Construction Update

Crews have begun final work on the bridges over Parr Creek (5990 on map) and North Fork McDonald Creek (5994 on map). Once work is complete, paving operations will begin, followed by the application of a seal and cover (chip seal) and reflective epoxy striping at each site

Motorists traveling through the project area should expect reduced speeds, single-lane traffic, temporary traffic lights, and possible delays.

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner, Kiewit, are continuing construction on the MT 200 Bridges Lewistown Area project.

This project is reconstructing 10 bridges along US Highway 87 (US 87)/Montana Highway 200 (MT 200) in the Lewistown area, replacing the aging structures with new bridges or culverts. Nine of the bridges were constructed prior to 1940 and the timber structures are reaching the end of their useful and serviceable life. In addition to the bridge replacements, the project includes:

  • Minor road and approach construction to tie the new structures into the existing road
  • Widening an approach for mail route turn-around (bridge #5993)
  • Flattening the Briggs Coulee curve (bridge #6005)
  • Flattening the roadway profile and installing lighted wildlife signage at Elk Creek (bridge #6101)
  • Upgrading the Ayers irrigation ditch
  • Improving flood conditions at North Fork McDonald Creek (bridge #5994)
  • Reconstructing nearly three miles of roadway adjacent to bridges
  • Widening shoulders near the bridges
  • Installing new guardrail
  • Installing rumble strips
  • Fencing improvements

Construction is expected to continue through 2026, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting.
