Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with engineering firm Sanbell, has begun the design phase of an improvement project to enhance safety features and accessibility at the intersection of Mill Street and Rabel Lane with U.S. Highway 191 (US 191)/Gallatin Road in Gallatin Gateway.
A new traffic signal will be installed to help address intersection-related crashes and operational concerns. Other improvements include adding sidewalks and sidewalk ramps that meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
Planned improvements include:
- Installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Mill Street and Rabel Lane with US 191/Gallatin Road.
- Installing LED lighting at the intersection.
- Widening Mill Street on the west side of the intersection to include a left turn lane.
- Installing a new sidewalk with ADA-compliant ramps to provide connectivity from the existing trail along Mill Street to Gallatin Gateway School.
Tentative Timeline
The project is currently in the early design phase. As part of this phase, a project open house will be scheduled for the community to learn more, share their feedback, and ask questions directly to the project team.
A date for this open house has not yet been set. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to reach out with thoughts and questions by calling the project hotline at 406-207-4484, operating Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by emailing

A construction date for the project has not yet been scheduled.
Project Funding
The Mill Street Intersection Improvements project is being funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). The primary focus of the program is to identify locations where higher-severity crashes have occurred and prioritize work to reduce them.
