The Beartooth Highway is currently CLOSED for the season.
The road closes each winter because of excessive snow and adverse winter conditions.
Snow levels vary and drifts can be as high as 26 feet in the higher elevations.
MDT is responsible for the highway to the Montana/Wyoming border, where the National Park Service takes over maintenance responsibilities through Wyoming, back into Montana and into Yellowstone Park.
The highway is generally open from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through mid September. MDT and NPS coordinate closely in keeping the road open. Unpredictable weather conditions at these high elevations do cause temporary closures throughout the summer.
Opening the Beartooth Highway is a huge undertaking - check out these videos of our crews working hard to get it open for the 2022 season. During the time that crews were working to open the road, we posted a new video almost daily!
A map of the Beartooth highway is provided to assist with descriptions and landmarks mentioned in the videos.
