April 2026 - Roadwork Resumes

Roadwork resumes on the US 93 West of Whitefish project. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Knife River – Mountain West Division, will set up traffic control starting Friday, April 17, and will begin operations the week of April 20. The schedule is subject to change depending on weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Construction Activities and Location:.
Starting the week of April 20, crews will be hauling material between mile markers 130.5 and 132 (approximately Antler Ridge Road to Little Mountain Road).

Traffic Control and Road Conditions:
Drivers can expect gravel roads and single-lane traffic control directed by pilot cars and flaggers during construction. Please plan for reduced speeds and up to 15-minute delays during traffic stops. Please drive with caution and be mindful of workers and equipment in the area.

The work corridor begins near the intersection with Mountainside Drive and extends approximately 3 miles west, just past Livermore Flats. Planned safety enhancements for the US 93 West of Whitefish project include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices. Improvements began in 2025 and will be completed in the 2026 construction season.

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) continues roadwork on the US 93 West of Whitefish project. This road reconstruction project includes a section of U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) in Whitefish, starting near the intersection of US 93 and Mountainside Drive and continuing west for approximately 3 miles, ending just past Livermore Flats. Improvements began in 2025 and will be completed during the 2026 construction season.

Planned safety enhancements for the US 93 West of Whitefish project include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices.

The first phase of this project included tree clearing, which was necessary under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 for both utility relocation and highway reconstruction. LTL Enterprises finished the clearing required for utility relocations, and in 2025, clearing activities were completed before highway construction began.

Road construction is ongoing and will enhance safety features on the roadway, as well as improve nonmotorized accessibility in Whitefish. The goal of this project is to extend the service life of this section of US 93 so it continues to serve the community for years to come.
