October 23-27, 2023

Fall weather has set in, and the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are concluding work on the MT 64 TIGER Grant project for 2023. Here’s what you can expect for the week of October 23.

Landscaping work is finished for the year. Signage installation is scheduled for this week, and minimal traffic impacts are expected while this work is occurring. Outstanding irrigation activities will be conducted next spring.

Signal activation at Little Coyote Road is anticipated for October 25, but is dependent upon Northwestern Energy’s completion of the power service.

Project segments completed this year:

  • Construction of a left-turn lane at Big Sky Resort Road.
  • Construction of left-turn lanes at Andesite Road and Big Pine Drive.
  • Paved shared-use path along MT 64 from Big Pine Drive to Andesite Road.
  • Construction of a left-turn lane and associated improvements at Huntley Drive.
  • Construction of a pedestrian bridge adjacent to the Big Sky Community Park.
  • Installation of a traffic signal and left and right-turn lanes at Little Coyote Road.
  • Construction of a left-turn lane at Meadow Village Drive.
  • Construction of a pedestrian tunnel under MT 64 west of Little Coyote Drive.
  • Signage upgrades.

Segments to be completed in 2024

  • Improvements at US Highway 191 (US 191) including the elimination of gravel shoulder parking by extending curb and gutter, installation of paved bus pull-outs, and installation of pull-outs for wildlife viewing.
  • Paving through the pedestrian tunnel.
  • Kircher Park Trail repairs.
  • Seal and cover (chip seal) of the project area.
  • Permanent roadway striping.

Construction on the pedestrian tunnel is substantially complete. The trail is paved up to both tunnel entrances. The remaining section through the tunnel will be paved in 2024. There is an uneven surface at both ends and concrete joints throughout the tunnel that could be a tripping hazard. Tunnel lighting is expected to be turned on in conjunction with the Little Coyote Road signal activation. Pedestrians using the path and tunnel are encouraged to use caution.

Kircher Park Trail is closed while the MT 64 TIGER Grant project team evaluates needed repairs. A survey of the area has occurred, and project team members are working closely with the Big Sky Community Organization to create a repair plan. The project team anticipates repairs will be completed as early as next spring, weather and other factors permitting. The trail will remain closed until repairs are completed.

MDT, Gallatin County, and project contractors are grateful for the community's patience and support during this project.
