Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and L&J Construction are rehabilitating four bridges in the Livingston area. These bridges include the bridge that carries U.S. Highway 89 (US 89) over Interstate 90 (I-90) at Exit 340, the bridge that carries US 89 over I-90 at Exit 337, the bridge that carries US 89 over the Yellowstone River north of Exit 340, and Carter’s Bridge on East River Road over the Yellowstone River.
The purpose of this project is to make cost-effective repairs that extend the service life of the bridges, improve their driving surfaces, and enhance safety.
Improvements include:
- Concrete bridge overlays
- Bridge deck (driving surface) repairs
- Bridge deck crack sealing
- Modification or replacement of bridge barrier rail and guardrail
- Bridge beam and structural repair
- Permanent erosion control improvements
Specific repairs or improvements will vary from location to location for this project.
Construction is anticipated to begin April 2026 and be completed in a single season.
What to expect during construction:
- Reduced speed limits
- Temporary signals or flaggers directing traffic at times
- Temporary lane closures
- A 10-foot width restriction on the bridges (Visit 511mt.net for up-to-date information on width restrictions for individual structures)
- Detours at Exit 340 for US 89 traffic
Detour Route
The US 89 bridge at Exit 340 will be closed during construction. Motorists traveling westbound on I-90 can still use Exit 340 to turn northbound onto US 89, but will need to detour to Exit 337, return to I-90 eastbound, and use Exit 340 to access Mission Field Airport.
Motorists traveling eastbound on I-90 can access Mission Field Airport, but will need to detour to Exit 343, return to I-90 westbound, and use Exit 340 to access US 89 north.
Those traveling southbound on US 89 seeking to enter eastbound I-90 will first need to travel westbound on I-90 and use Exit 337 to turn around and return to I-90 eastbound.
Why is the project needed?
The project will address deck surfacing issues using various rehabilitation methods to prolong the service life of the structures. These bridges have become worn down and need repairs. If not addressed the long-term maintenance cost on these bridges would continue to rise.
