Kalispell Bypass

Project Overview

Starting July 13, travelers can expect to see large equipment and machinery off of the Kalispell Bypass (U.S. 93 Alternate), near the Foys Lake Road interchange, beginning Monday, July 13, as contractors continue to refine the final project design on behalf of the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT).

MDT contractors LHC and TetraTech will have crews taking soil samples along the Kalispell Bypass at the Foys Lake Road intersection. The soil samples will help engineers better determine what sub-surface conditions are while also identifying the locations of underground utilities. This information is critical in finalizing the interchange’s design, as contractors are able to ascertain if the ground is compact enough to support large structures, if there is a great deal of rock in the soil, and other factors that can make construction immensely more complicated or that could lead to long term design issues.

During the soil-sampling phase, which is expected to run through July, equipment and sampling activities will be off of the roadway. While impacts to commuters will be limited, speeds will be reduced to 35 MPH in the limited work zone.

In June, the Montana Transportation Commission awarded the Kalispell Bypass - Foys Lake Road Interchange contract to LHC Construction, Inc., working in partnership with KLJ, Inc. This team includes both the engineering design team and construction contractors who will work with the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) to deliver the final Foys Lake Road/Kalispell Bypass intersection design later this year, allowing construction to begin early in 2021.

Development of the final interchange configuration is ongoing. The public can expect to see those design details later this summer.

The Montana Department of Transportation installed the existing roundabout at the Foys Lake Road/Kalispell Bypass intersection with the original intent of removing it at a later date when traffic demands were higher, and funding was available. This process is called phased development and provides a temporary infrastructure solution while funds are accrued, and property is acquired for the final, more permanent solution. The Bypass roadway will be expanded to include four lanes with a grade-separated crossing at Foys Lake Road, similar to the infrastructure of the northern portion of the Bypass. This is the first of the remaining Kalispell Bypass projects moving into the construction phase.

The LHC/KLJ bid came in at $14.7 million. The City of Kalispell was awarded $12.7 million in federal BUILD Grant funds to remove the roundabout and widen the roadway to four lanes throughout the project, which is anticipated to be substantially completed in 2021.

Alternatives will be presented at an open house on Thursday, January 30, 2020. Join the MDT team at the Hampton Inn (1140 U.S. Hwy 2 West) to review alternatives, provide feedback, ask questions and learn more about the future of the project.

No formal presentation will be made at the open house sessions. The information presented at each session will be the same; please attend the session that fits best with your schedule.

Information will also be available on the Foys Lake Interchange; construction may begin on this particular intersection as soon as the fall of 2020.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has hired the engineering firm, KLJ, to study and design 1.5 miles of the Kalispell Bypass. As part of this community-wide project in the Flathead Valley, crews will be studying and evaluating how the Airport Road and Siderius intersections may be rebuilt to better facilitate increasing traffic volumes. To make these determinations, traffic data will be collected. The public will have ample opportunities to share their feedback and stay up-to-date on the project.

Note that this particular project does not include the Foys Lake Road intersection, as that is a separate project MDT is currently planning to begin construction in the fall of 2020.

The existing bypass is an eight-mile stretch of roadway that was designed as a four-lane westside bypass to provide an additional high-volume route for residents and travelers to divert around the center of Kalispell. The southern-most three miles were built in an “interim” configuration which provided two lanes and roundabouts at public road intersections.

The southern section, from Siderius Roundabout to south of US Highway 2 was originally constructed as an interim project (with only two lanes of traffic) and always was planned to be widened when funding was available.

MDT now plans to convert the southern section to a four-lane roadway with studies set to determine the future of the existing roundabout at the Siderius interchange.

In addition to these interchanges, the Bypass will provide two additional travel lanes, a new bridge carrying Airport Road over the Bypass. The existing pathway will be maintained at its current location and is expected to be open during construction unless a short closure is needed for safety reasons.

The first segment of the Bypass opened to carry traffic to the new Glacier High School in 2008. Initial construction began with the road now known as Old Reserve Drive, with the full Bypass carrying traffic around Kalispell beginning in October 2016.

This is the point where we are today.


MDT consultants are currently in the process of study and evaluating the Airport Road and Siderius intersections. The goal is to have alternatives available for the public to review on in late fall of 2019, as engineering studies will be completed. These will be the directing documents that shape the future of both the Airport Road and Siderius intersections.

Throughout this development, community partners such as Flathead County, the City of Kalispell, emergency responders, local businesses, and local landowners, will be sharing their feedback to guide MDT to the recommended plan for construction.

At this time, MDT anticipates that construction of the preferred alternative on US 93 at the Airport Road and Siderius interchanges could begin in the coming years.
