Montana Department of Transportation proposes updating intersection
curb ramps to comply with American with Disabilities Act (ADA),

to
enhance safety and access for all

WHITEHALL-MANHATTAN-TOWNSEND,
Montana. (August 9, 2019) The Montana Department of Transportation
(MDT) is considering plans to upgrade intersections to include ADA
compliant pedestrian facilities in the following communities.

•Whitehall upgrades are located along Legion Avenue (P55/69)
beginning at the intersection of Bowman Lane and ending at A Street;
and along Whitehall Street (P-55) beginning at the intersection of
1st Street and ending at the I-90 Eastbound On-Off Ramp.

•Manhattan upgrades are located along S. Broadway Street (Secondary
346) beginning at the intersection of Woodenshoe Lane and ending at
Railroad Avenue; along N. 5th Street beginning at the intersection of
Railroad Avenue and extending to Cedar Street; and along Main Street
beginning at the intersection of 2nd Street and ending at 8th Street.

•Townsend upgrades are located along Front Street (US 287)
beginning at the intersection of 7th Street and ending at E Street;
along Broadway Street (US-12) beginning at the intersection of Pine
Street and ending at Harrison Avenue.

The ultimate goal of the
project is to provide equal access to employment, health care,
education and other services that are commonly accessible via city
streets. Additionally, commuters on foot, users with limited mobility
and users with strollers, walkers and other wheeled devices will be
able to use the sidewalk approaches with more ease. Users will enjoy
more walkable sidewalks once the upgrades are completed.

The
project is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in spring of
2020 depending on completion of all project development activities
and availability of funding.

An important part of properly
planning for the future is partnering with the community. Montana
