ACME crews have completed all construction activities for the 2020 season. Their crews will be back in May for final roadway striping and other small items that were not closed out this year.

Project Overview

This summer, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will make improvements to some of Missoula’s largest thoroughfares including Reserve Street and the Interstate 90/Grant Creek Road intersections. Construction will take place in various locations including:

  • Resurfacing of 5.4 miles of Reserve Street, from Brooks Street to Interstate 90.
  • Reconfiguration of the Grant Creek Road and Interstate 90 intersection.
  • ADA upgrades at all Interstate 90 eastbound ramps, Interstate 90 and Reserve Street intersection, and the Expressway and Reserve Street intersection.

Why So Many Projects?

Both projects are being lumped together to save on cost and ensure efficiency. The same prime contractor will complete all of the work, streamlining the process and providing Missoula with many needed improvements in one construction season.

Most of this project will also be under construction at night. The construction areas are some of the busiest roads across the entire state of Montana. MDT is working to ease traffic congestion related to road construction by completing a large portion of the Reserve Street concrete rehab project and the Grant Creek intersection at night.

While some special circumstances might require single lane closures during the day, MDT anticipates that most work will be performed between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

It’s important to note that night work isn’t a possibility for every MDT project. As an example, some road construction requires daytime temperatures for materials to set properly. Luckily, the Reserve Street Concrete Rehab project will use materials and methods that don’t require as restrictive of temperature requirements. Most work on the project will take place before or after peak traffic times.

What Impacts Should I Expect?

Reserve Street from Brooks Street to Interstate 90
During nighttime work hours, travelers should expect single-lane closures for two miles, directional signage, signals and lower speed limits. Flaggers may be present while work is being performed. Although crews may not be present, the project area is considered an active construction zone 24-hours per day. Regardless of time of day, drivers should exercise caution and be alert for changes to traffic patterns.

Nighttime work will lessen impacts to daytime travelers in Missoula, but some businesses might experience noise during the later hours. Business accesses will remain open, but delays can be anticipated in the evening for drivers entering or exiting. We recognize that some businesses are still operating overnight, and many will be sleeping; Motnana Department of Transportation is committed to minimizing noise impacts and working efficiently to finish up as quickly as possible.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to utilize sidewalks or use an alternate route.

Grant Creek Road and Interstate 90 Intersection
During nighttime work hours, travelers should expect shoulder and single lane closures. Flaggers may be present while work is being performed. During daytime work hours, drivers should expect shoulder closures, lower speed limits and construction workers to be present. Delays of up to 15 minutes are possible.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to avoid the construction area when possible.

When and Where Are These Projects Occurring?

Reserve Street Pavement Preservation
5.4 miles of Reserve Street, from Brooks Street to Interstate 90, will be resurfaced through pavement preservation. Pavement preservation construction works to keep good roads in good condition for years to come. Construction in all areas will begin in June and take approximately 6 months to complete.

The majority of the work along Reserve Street will be completed during the week and at night. Working hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. This portion of the larger project is estimated to cost $5.7 million.

Grant Creek Road and Interstate 90 Reconfiguration
As part of this larger project, MDT will also reconfigure the Grant Creek Road and Interstate 90 intersection, north of the Reserve Street and Interstate 90 intersection. The following intersection improvements will be made to increase roadway capacity for southbound traffic:

  • A southbound lane on Grant Creek Road will be added on the north side of the intersection.
  • A southbound bike lane will be added alongside Grant Creek Road.
  • A southbound right-turn lane will be added to Grant Creek Road for vehicle access onto the Interstate 90 westbound entrance ramp.
  • New traffic signal.

ADA Upgrades
Additionally, MDT will make ADA upgrades at a few key intersections to ensure access for all:

  • Interstate 90 eastbound ramps.
  • Interstate 90 and Reserve Street intersection.
  • Expressway and Reserve Street intersection.

The majority of the work at Grant Creek Road and Interstate 90 intersection and ADA upgrades will be completed during the week and at night. Working hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. This work is estimated to cost $1.2 million, with the City of Missoula contributing $200,000.

Keeping Reserve Street in Good Condition

MDT performs preventative maintenance or “pavement preservation” around the state. Just like regularly changing your car’s oil, you’ll see MDT crews and contractors working to protect pavement with regularly scheduled maintenance projects.

Keeping good roads in good shape is a strong investment in our infrastructure system. Rather than putting all resources towards roads that have fallen into serious disrepair, pavement preservation helps ensure that good roads remain good and don’t fall into poor condition.

Roads in truly bad shape require a lot more money, time and resources to fix up. Pavement preservation keeps more Montana roads from falling into serious disrepair and keeps Montana drivers from experiencing major road construction.

Instead of waiting until a road deteriorates to the point where it would require millions of dollars to repair, resulting in lengthy traffic disruptions that could extend for an entire summer or more, pavement preservation extends the life of these roads with minimal investment and disruptions.

Diamond Grinding
For this project, MDT will conduct diamond grinding to improve the surface of the road. For this work to take place, closely spaced diamond saw blades are ground against the road to remove hardened concrete and bumps that cause rough commutes. This allows the roadway to be smoothed and provides a quality driving surface. While this preservation work is cost-effective and vital to a strong system, it can also be noisy.

Joint/Crack Sealing
MDT will seal joints and cracks in the concrete pavement to keep water and other materials out. This is a minimally invasive procedure and a basic step of most larger concrete pavement preservation projects.

Additional Concrete Repairs
If there are areas where concrete is past the point of rehabilitation, MDT will fill those areas with new concrete.
