Construction of ADA sidewalks on Orange Street in Missoula

The Montana Department of Transportation is updating sidewalk corners throughout the City of Missoula to make sure they are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Updates to ramps on street corners will allow all users to get on and off sidewalks more easily. People with disabilities, parents with strollers or small children, delivery drivers, older adults and other groups will enjoy more accessible curbs once construction is complete.

The next phase of the Missoula ADA project included work to Gerald Avenue and Higgins Avenue, between Brooks Street and Fourth Street. Work on Gerald Avenue has been completed.

In the Hip Strip area of Higgins Avenue, work will occur on all intersections on the east side of Higgins Avenue, starting at the intersection of Higgins Avenue and Brooks Street and moving north to the intersection of Fourth Street and Higgins Avenue. Once all intersections on the east side of the street are updated, crews will move to the west side of the street and work south from Fourth and Higgins to Brooks and Higgins.

During the construction, travelers on Higgins Avenue may experience traffic congestion. Vehicle traffic will be narrowed to one lane in some sections, with possible short closures of side streets. To ensure the resident and patron cars are not damaged, parking will not be permitted within 50 feet of street corners under active construction; motorists are encouraged to park midblock to avoid being towed.

Work will be performed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday - Saturday during each week. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to be mindful of other users, and should obey all posted work zone signage. Pedestrians are encouraged to use alternative routes during construction, such as neighboring streets.
