Construction nearly complete; will resume in 2023

Construction on the I 90 St. Regis West Project has been substantially completed. Painting final pavement markings will be the last step in the project, but this work is highly weather dependent. Consistent rainy weather has stopped construction for the remainder of 2022.

Crews will return next year to apply final paint striping, which will officially complete the project. This work is expected to only take about two weeks to complete when weather conditions allow.

I 90 will return to its normal traffic pattern over the winter.

July 8, 2022

Crews completed a chip seal of the Two Mile Road Interchange (Exit 30) and St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33) ramps this week.

Work is still ongoing fog sealing and pavement marking in the project area. Motorists traveling through the project area should be prepared for traffic congestion.

While construction is taking place, motorists should expect:

  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Both east and westbound traffic will travel on the same side of I 90 between the St. Regis and Drexel interchanges.
  • Speed limits will be reduced.
  • Width restrictions will be in place (Visit www.511mt.net for the most up-to-date information).

June 11 - Trail Run

MDT will work to accommodate a trail run taking place in the area on Saturday, June 11.

Motorists traveling eastbound on I 90 will have to continue east to St. Regis (Exit 33) before going back on I 90 west to access the Two Mile Road exit.

To read the full road report visit www.511mt.net.

While construction is taking place, motorists should expect:

• Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
• Both east and westbound traffic will travel on the same side of I 90 between the St. Regis and Drexel interchanges.
• Speed limits will be reduced.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Construction will pause over the winter and resume in 2022.

Crews have substantially completed project construction for 2021. Work will resume next year (2022) on the eastbound lanes beginning west of the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33) and ending about one mile east of Ward Creek Road (Exit 26). MDT will provide notification prior to work resuming in 2022.

What to expect this fall:

• Speed limits are expected to remain at normal interstate speeds.
• Crews will be doing miscellaneous work at times.
• Traffic may be reduced to one lane on occasion if crews are working. Please use caution and watch for workers along the road.

The Montana Department of Transportation thanks you for your patience throughout construction this summer.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Traffic now in new configuration

Traffic in the project area has now shifted, with east and westbound traffic both traveling on the same side of the interstate. This change begins about two miles east of the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33), and continues approximately eight miles to the west, ending between the Two Mile and Drexel interchanges.

• Eastbound traffic will be able to access the Two Mile Interchange (Exit 30) as normal.
• Westbound traffic wishing to access the Two Mile Interchange must exit at the Drexel Interchange (Exit 25) and detour back to the Two Mile Interchange from the east.
• Traffic exiting the Two Mile Interchange wishing to travel west must travel east to the St. Regis Interchange (Exit 33) and then return westbound on I90.

Please use caution, follow signage, and pay attention to workers in the area.

What to expect during construction:

• Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.
• Both east and westbound traffic will travel on the same side of I90 between the St. Regis and Drexel interchanges.
• Speed limits are reduced through the work zone.
• Vehicle widths are restricted in both east and westbound directions. For the latest width restriction information, visit the MDT travel info website: https://www.511mt.net/
• Wide loads must be staged and piloted through the work zone by 7 am. Call Kurt Johnston at Mountain West Holding Company between the hours of 8 a.m. & 6 p.m. for further information on passage through the project. Phone Phone 406-490-7230.

July 23, 2021

New traffic patterns will begin this weekend (7/24).

Beginning this Saturday (7/24), new crossover patterns will be in effect through the work zone. A new pattern will begin about two miles east of the St. Regis exit (Exit 33), and continue approximately four miles to the east, ending near the Two Mile Interchange. The pattern will shift east and westbound traffic into the westbound lanes.

This shift will allow crews to complete work in the eastbound lanes of I90. Please use caution, follow signage, and pay attention to workers in the area as traffic patterns and construction activities will be changing regularly (see below).

What to expect during construction:

Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.

Both east and westbound traffic will travel on the same side of I90 beginning east of the St. Regis Interchange.

Speed limits are reduced to 35 MPH through the work zone.

June 25, 2021

Nighttime work is expected to take place starting Sunday night (6/27).

Due to excessive heat forecasted over the coming weeks, a majority of work on the interstate will occur at night. The nighttime work will allow more work to be done due to the cooler temperatures, and reduce stress on workers. Construction hours may be adjusted over the summer depending on changing temperatures.

What's next?
Crews will not be working over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Construction will not take place between 3 p.m. on Friday, July 2 and 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 6.

Crews are continuing installing dowel bars in the westbound lanes to strengthen the roadway. This work is taking place between Two Mile Road (Exit 30) and Ward Creek Road (Exit 26). Watch for changing traffic patterns as crews readjust lane configurations to maximize the flow of traffic.

The Two Mile Road Interchange Ramp (Exit 30) is temporarily closed. Traffic will be detoured to the next closest exit.

  • The eastbound on and off-ramps will remain open to traffic.
  • Westbound traffic will detour to the Drexel Interchange (Exit 25), return to I90 traveling eastbound, and exit at the Two Mile Interchange (about 9 miles).

What to expect during construction:
