I-15 Sieben North Pavement Preservation project logo

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Jeffery Contracting Inc. will rehabilitate approximately 4 miles of Interstate 15 (I-15) north of the Sieben Interchange (Exit 216). The project area begins just north of the Sieben Interchange and extends north approximately 4 miles, ending about 5 miles south of Wolf Creek. The project will also update existing guardrail and concrete barriers to modern standards and reroute storm drainage near the Spring Creek Interchange (Exit 219).

This project is expected to extend the service life of the roadway, improve the ride of the existing pavement, and enhance safety features in this location. The project will also reduce issues that require regular maintenance along this section of the interstate.

Improvements include:

  • Removing and replacing more than a foot of degraded roadway material on I-15
  • Upgrading concrete barrier rails, metal guardrail, and signage
  • Adding concrete barrier delineation (high-visibility reflective strips) on inside curves
  • Replacing right-of-way fencing and cattle guards as needed
  • Resurfacing the Spring Creek Interchange (Exit 219) ramps
  • Removing a culvert and rerouting drainage through a new storm drainpipe on the east side of the Spring Creek Interchange
  • Adding new pavement markings
  • Applying a seal and cover (chip seal)

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2026 and take 2 years to complete.

What to expect during construction:

  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Both north and southbound traffic will travel on the same side of I-15.
  • Crossover traffic patterns will be in place throughout construction.
  • Speed limits will be reduced.
  • Intermittent closures will occur from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Friday to escort oversized loads.
  • A 12-foot width restriction will be in place (visit 511mt.net for the most up-to-date information).
  • Wide loads over 12 feet will be staged at both ends of the work zone.

Why is the project needed?
MDT identified this stretch of interstate as being worn down and in need of repairs. This project will address the deteriorated roadway in a manner that will decrease long-term maintenance costs and extend the service life of the roadway for many years. The new signage and roadway markers were included as part of this project to enhance safety features along this corridor.

This project will address degrading materials underneath this section of the interstate. The roadway is safe to drive on; however, the harsh climate and numerous freeze/thaw cycles have caused material to degrade over many years. To reduce maintenance in this area, geotechnical engineers recommended removing and replacing the existing road base with material that will not degrade from the freeze/thaw cycle. Replacing the base will increase the anticipated life of new pavement by 5 to 10 years.
