Weekly Updates

January 8, 2021

  • The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction crews have completed the embankment, or foundation soil, placement portion of the US Highway 87 - Great Falls project between Dent Bridge Road and Great Bear Avenue. Thank you for your patience during this process.
  • As you know, embankment was unloaded on both sides of the road this fall and early winter and was left to settle. This will create a solid foundation for road widening work beginning this spring. This spring’s roadwork will introduce both passing lanes and turning lanes throughout this seven-mile stretch. The goal of this project is to increase the flow of traffic and provide safer roadways for all.
  • MDT will inform the public and media as to when full road construction will officially begin next spring. The schedule will be largely dependent upon the weather, as warm and dry conditions are crucial for successful roadway work. Crews anticipate working from spring of 2021 through November of 2021. The majority of roadwork will be completed next year. Then, in 2022, workers will return briefly to finish painting and chip sealing the road.
  • Drivers should not experience any further delays this winter.
  • Please call 406-207-4484 or email Becca at with any questions or to sign up for project updates. Text updates are also available by texting "GREATFALLS NORTH" to 41411.
  • This will be the last update until spring approaches.

Previous Updates

December 18, 2020

  • The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Schellinger Construction are wrapping up US Highway 87 roadwork for the year!
  • This past week, workers have been completing ditch work and placing erosion control within the seven-mile work zone. Starting Saturday, Dec. 19, crews will no longer be present or impacting traffic. Drivers should not experience delays for the remainder of the calendar year.
  • Now that the embankment placement is substantially complete, MDT will allow the foundation soil to settle. Come spring next year, Schellinger equipment and crews will return for much of 2021 to add passing and turn lanes along the route. This road expansion will reduce congestion and create a safe driving experience for travelers.
  • There will be no email update on Friday, Dec. 25 or Friday, Jan. 1. Additional updates are to come in early 2021.
  • Please call 406-207-4484 or email Becca at with any questions or to sign up for project updates. Text updates are also available by texting "GREATFALLS NORTH" to 41411.

  • The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will continue to place embankment, or foundation soil, throughout the seven-mile work zone as weather permits. This means that some days crews and equipment will be out working and other days they will not; all depending on the weather. Similar to last week, Schellinger crews anticipate working on this portion of the project through late November in preparation for spring 2021 construction. November 6, 2020

  • Great Falls travelers will continue to experience minor delays on US Highway 87 north of Great Falls. This fall’s roadwork is in preparation for full road construction in the spring of 2021. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Schellinger Construction, continues to place embankment, or foundation soil, on both sides of the highway. Currently, crews anticipate working on this portion of the project through late November. MDT will provide an update if this timeframe changes.
  • Drivers will see equipment and workers present between Essex Lane and Dent Bridge Road for another week or two. After this stretch is complete, Schellinger crews will move further south towards Great Falls. The two stoplights with accompanying flaggers, one in each direction of the highway, remain at Essex Lane and Dent Bridge Road intersections. These lights will instruct drivers when to stop and wait for a pilot car. Travelers should anticipate minor delays.
  • As crews place embankment within the work zone, they are also putting down a form of netting or fabric in addition to the foundation soil. This creates additional solidity and strength for the embankment’s stability. It will be left to settle for 180 days this winter. Then, MDT will begin full road construction in spring of 2021.
  • The embankment placement process is preparing the extended roadsides to include turn lanes and passing lanes next year. Roadway expansion is occurring due to increased traffic volumes through the area. The Montana Department of Transportation’s goal with this project is to increase safety and reduce traffic congestion.
  • Please note, an update will be communicated if weather causes a pause in work progress. Travelers are encouraged to be cautious when driving and aware of workers and equipment on and beside the road. Signs will indicate when and where to slow down. This stretch of road will not be closed this fall. Please reach out with any questions.

  • Minor roadwork resumes this week on US Highway 87 north of Great Falls. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Schellinger Construction, continues to place embankment, or foundation soil, on both sides of the roadway. Earlier this week, crews moved piles of snow to reduce the impacts of it melting on the embankment. Now, crews are continuing roadwork with accompanying traffic controls. At this time, this fall’s minor roadwork is still expected to end late November. MDT will provide an update if this timeframe changes.
  • Crews have returned to the project zone between Essex Lane and Dent Bridge Road on Highway 87. When traveling this route, drivers will notice two stoplights with accompanying flaggers; one headed in each direction of the highway. These lights will instruct drivers when to stop and wait for a pilot car to lead them. Travelers should anticipate minor delays.
  • This entire process of embankment, or foundation soil, placement will occur between Dent Bridge Road and just north of Great Bear Avenue. This seven-mile zone of road-side embankment will be left to settle this winter. The settled foundation soil will provide stabilized ground for the coming passing lanes and turn lanes in spring of 2021. Details about where turn lanes and pass lanes will be located will be communicated prior to construction next year. As a reminder, crews are anticipated to complete this initial embankment, or foundation soil, placement work at the end of November, weather dependent.
  • Updates will be communicated if weather causes another pause in work progress. Travelers are encouraged to be cautious when driving and aware of workers and equipment on and beside the road. Signs will indicate when and where to slow down. This stretch of road will not be closed this fall. MDT appreciates your patience during this project.

As the fall progresses, travelers will notice equipment moving further south down the work zone, towards Great Falls. Once construction resumes, drivers should anticipate two stoplights with accompanying flaggers; one headed in each direction of the highway. These lights will instruct drivers when to stop and wait for a pilot car to lead them. Travelers should anticipate minor delays.
  • This embankment, or foundation soil, placement along the seven-mile stretch of Highway 87 is being left to settle this winter in order for construction crews to build passing lanes and turn lanes along this stretch of road. This expansion is due to the increase in traffic volumes through the area. Specific details about where turn lanes and pass lanes will begin, and end will be communicated prior to construction next year. As a reminder, crews are anticipated to complete this initial embankment, or foundation soil, placement work at the end of November, weather dependent.
  • This week and early next week, roadwork is paused due to weather conditions. Crews are not anticipated to be back on the roadside until the end of October. Travelers are encouraged to be cautious when driving due to wet and freezing road conditions. This stretch of road will not be closed this fall. Once this section is complete, trucks will continue to move south down the highway, closer to Great Falls. The work zone ends north of Great Bear Avenue.
  • This initial roadwork is occurring in preparation for full road construction in spring of 2021. The embankment, or foundation soil, now on both sides of the roadway, will be used to build a foundation for road expansion work next spring. MDT will create both passing lanes and turn lanes on this stretch of road. Please be prepared for additional information as spring construction approaches. Crews will complete this initial embankment, or foundation soil, placement work at the end of November.
  • This coming week, driver information remains the same as previous weeks. Travelers may experience minor delays when passing through the area. In the construction zone, speeds are reduced to 35 MPH. Drivers will notice flaggers at intersections, including Essex lane, to inform them of pilot car operations controlling traffic. MDT also encourages all travelers to please be cautious of workers and equipment when passing through. There will be signage along the route that will indicate where to slow down.
