Great Falls Bridge

After a strong 2019 construction season, work has temporarily wrapped up on the Great Falls Bridges projects.

Improvements to bridge decks were finalized in early December, meaning traffic flow across the area will be returning to normal. Bridge decks on Interstate 15 between Wolf Creek and Gates of the Mountains and Exit 0 at Marketplace in Great Falls have been under construction this summer, receiving much-needed deck maintenance.

Seven structures on Interstate 15 were stripped of their deck layer, repaired, and resurfaced this summer including Gates of the Mountains Interchange, Sieben Interchange, Spring Creek Interchange, Little Prickly Pear Bridge and Lyons Bridge.

In Great Falls, the Exit 0 Bridge at Marketplace was also improved, extending the life of the bridge for as many as 20 years.

Final touches to these bridges are planned for the Spring of 2020, as weather allows. Work to be done includes a polymer overlay, chip sealing, and painting. Polymer overlay and chip sealing are like the final layer of sealant during tile work or the topcoat of a manicure; they are the last step to ensure repairs are protected.

The remaining construction scheduled for next spring is not expected to last more than two to three weeks. Updates will be sent to those on our email and text lists to ensure residents and travelers are well informed.

Construction Details

Bridge deck construction projects will be improving bridges along the Interstate 15 corridor from Helena into Great Falls this summer. We plan to minimize impacts to your commute and travel by providing timely updates and helpful details throughout the construction.

Interstate 15 Bridge Deck Improvements

In an effort to our keep good roads good, bridge deck improvements are scheduled to begin in mid-April and continue throughout the summer months. While construction is underway, travelers should anticipate changes in lane configurations, which will include traffic crossovers. Traffic will continue in both directions throughout the entire project. Delays to accommodate wide loads are possible, so we recommend that commuters plan additional travel time. Signage will be present to alert drivers to these conditions in advance of construction areas.

As a main route into the heart of Great Falls, the Exit 0 Bridge at Marketplace (Interstate 315 bridge structure between the Fox Farm signal and 14th Street) is an important lifeline for our community. This summer, construction will improve the Exit 0 bridge deck. Construction improvements will extend the life of the structure for up to 20 years.

Construction will begin mid-June and continue throughout the summer. Commuters and travelers are advised to plan ahead, especially during peak travel hours. Delays and congestion, specifically at the Fox Farm signal, may occur. Safety is the top priority during this construction project. There will be no impact to business access.
