View Montana's Crash Statistics
A Little History
The world's first road traffic death involving a motor vehicle is alleged to have occurred in August, 1869. An Irish scientist, Mary Ward, died when she fell out of her cousins' steam car and was run over. If Mary had been wearing a seatbelt, the outcome may have been different.
Today, motor vehicles crashes continue to be one of the top 5 causes of death in Montana. In Montana, more than half of the people killed in motor vehicle crashes each year are unbuckled.
Seat Belts Save Lives
Seatbelts reduce the risk of death for a front seat occupant by about 50 percent. (Source NHTSA)
