Beartooth Highway

Road Construction on US-212 mile marker 45 to 56.4
The road approximately 12 miles south of Red Lodge to the WY State Line will be closed each evening between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The road will be OPEN Friday and Saturday nights. This work schedule is expected to be in place until mid-late August.

All work will take place during the evening hour closures. There will be no restrictions when the gates open at 8 AM each morning. Travelers may encounter a milled surface and/or an abrupt edge where paving ended for that day. All paving is expected to be completed in time for the Bike Rally scheduled for July 14-16, 2017. Another important note for motorcycle traffic - there will be NO gravel surface as a result of this work.

EXPECT: Overlay activities.

The Beartooth Highway is currently OPEN for the season.

Because of the high elevation on this mountain pass, travelers should check current weather and road conditions. Crews make every effort to keep the road plowed and open, however unpredictable weather conditions may cause temporary closures throughout the summer.

Please check the road condition report for the most updated pass conditions.

MDT is responsible for the highway to the Montana/Wyoming border, where the National Park Service takes over maintenance responsibilities through Wyoming, back into Montana and into Yellowstone Park. MDT and NPS coordinate closely in keeping the road open throughout the summer.

Opening the Beartooth Highway is a huge undertaking - check out these videos of our crews working hard to get it open for the 2017 season! A map of Beartooth highway is provided to assist with descriptions and landmarks mentioned in the videos.
