of Transportation Proposes Safety Improvements on Secondary Highway
288 South of Manhattan
MANHATTAN — The Montana Department of
Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek
comments on a proposal to reconstruct two curves on Secondary Highway
288 (S-288) south of Manhattan in Gallatin County.
The first curve
is located on S-288 approximately 2.5 miles south of Manhattan
between reference post (RP) 2.4 and RP 2.7 near the White irrigation
ditch. Proposed work at this site includes earthwork operations to
allow widening of the existing surface, with signing and delineation
to supplement the widening.
The second curve is located on S-288
approximately 4.7 miles south of Manhattan between RP 4.5 and RP 5.0
at the intersection of Stagecoach Trail Road. Proposed work at this
site includes earthwork operations, paving, delineation, bridge
removal, box culvert installation, and minor realignments of public
and private approaches.
Both locations will be finished with a seal
and cover (chip seal), upgraded pavement markings, and signage. The
purpose of the project is to address an identified crash trend and
improve the highway safety at these two curves.
tentatively planned for 2021, depending on completion of design and
availability of funds. New right-of-way and relocation of utilities
will be required. MDT staff will contact all potentially affected
landowners prior to performing survey work on their land. Staff will
again contact landowners prior to construction regarding existing
irrigation features, fencing, cattle crossing/access, property
acquisition, and temporary construction permits.
