As a rural state with a large transportation system, Montana is heavily dependent upon federal transportation funding. MDT works with Montana's congressional delegation to ensure federal policies continue to recognize Montana's needs. State taxes and fees are another way MDT collects funds to build and maintain roads. The main source of taxes is Montana's Motor Fuel Tax, collected from the sale of gasoline and diesel fuel. Licensing and permit fees from commercial trucking provide additional funds. |
