  • Van Buren Street Interchange project crews are busy finishing landscaping next week, July 29-August 2.
  • The project will be fully completed by the end of next week! Thank you for your patience and engagement as we worked through the interchange construction. We know construction can be tough and are so pleased to be able to now fully deliver this project to the Rattlesnake neighborhood.

June 17-21, 2019

  • The Van Buren Street Interchange project is currently undergoing the chip seal process and should be finished this weekend. During that time, all Interstate 90 ramps will experience delays of up to 15 minutes at various times while crews perform the chip seal. This work will be performed as efficiently as possible to limit impacts to the traveling public as much as possible.
  • Northbound and southbound Van Buren Street traffic will be reduced to single-lanes, with flaggers directing safe travel.
  • Additional, brief, delays can be expected while crews move traffic control.

June 10-14, 2019

  • The Van Buren Street Interchange project will start to see some delays next week while crews prepare for a chip seal on Van Buren Street. The chip seal is anticipated to begin either Wednesday, June 12 or Thursday, June 13. The process takes approximately three days and is entirely weather-dependent.
  • As a result, all Interstate 90 ramps will experience delays of up to 15 minutes at various times while crews perform the chip seal. This work will be performed as efficiently as possible to limit impacts to the traveling public as much as possible.
  • Northbound and southbound Van Buren Street traffic will be reduced to single-lanes, with flaggers directing safe travel.
  • Additional, brief, delays can be expected while crews move traffic control.
  • The chip seal will begin at 8:30 a.m.
  • In addition to the chip seal, crews will continue with sidewalk construction. The western sidewalks will be closed while artists complete a mural on one of the small sound wall panels. However, sidewalks on the east side of Van Buren Street have been reopened. Please follow all posted signage for safe detours and travel in the construction area.

June 3-7, 2019

  • The Van Buren Street Interchange project will continue with sidewalk construction into next week, June 2-7, 2019. As a result, sidewalks on the east side of Van Buren Street will be closed. Please follow all posted signage for safe detours and travel in the construction area.
  • Trail connection work near Vine Street will also be progressing throughout the week.
  • The project schedule shows that the Van Buren Street Interchange project will be fully completed by mid-July 2019. Between now and then, crews will finalize landscaping and seeding. This work will not impact the traveling public, but there will be workers and large equipment in the area, so please be mindful of these factors.
  • Contractors will also be working to replace and/or repair some areas of the sidewalk and build in trail connection points. There will be single-lane closures on Van Buren Street while that work is being performed. As those schedules are better defined, we will be sure to let you know.
  • Also projected to impact traffic will be the final chip seal and striping of the roadway. This work is best completed in warm, dry conditions. As such, you’ll likely see that phase of the project executed in late June or early July.

May 28-31, 2019

  • Memorial Day weekend is upon us. Crews for the Van Buren Street Interchange project will be fully off of the roadway by noon today and will return back to work on Tuesday, May 28.
  • Again next week, the focus of project construction will be landscaping and signage. This will not affect traffic.
  • However, the Missoula ADA project will be moving to the area. Missoula ADA improvements from Madison to Jackson on the north side of Broadway will be completed no later than Thursday, May 23. This schedule allows for all single-lane closures to be removed over the Memorial Holiday weekend to facilitate the free flow of traffic on Broadway. On Tuesday, May 28, the Missoula ADA project will resume on the south side of Broadway, with potential traffic impacts for eastbound traffic from Madison to Van Buren.

November 12-16, 2018

  • Van Buren Street Interchange construction continues November 12-16. This will be the last week of work for the 2018 construction season. Additional efforts will resume in the spring of 2019 for landscaping and final chip sealing. .
  • All sidewalk work has been completed for the project. Median work will conclude on Van Buren Street by the end of the week.
  • Drivers are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and to use alternative routes.

November 5-9, 2018

  • All sidewalk work has been completed for the project. As such, facilities are open for safe pedestrian use. Median work will conclude on Van Buren Street early this week.
  • Landscaping within the roundabouts will be ongoing.
  • Interstate 90 guardrail has been installed. As such, the lane reduction has been removed, and two lanes of traffic have been restored.
  • Work should be largely completed within the coming weeks. Additional landscaping and some road work will continue in the spring of 2019.

  • The glass soundwall sections will be completed within the week.
  • Landscaping within the roundabouts will be ongoing and is anticipated to be completed in early November.
  • Additionally, all trail connections for the shared-use path and north-side sidewalk paving will be wrapping up. Non-motorized users will be able to use these facilities in the coming weeks.
  • The Interstate 90 guard rail is currently being installed. Once complete, the I-90 lane reduction will be removed, and two lanes of traffic will be restored.

  • Night work will begin Monday to complete storm drain work on Van Buren Street. During night construction, traffic will be one lane on Van Buren Street, controlled by flaggers. Construction may generate additional noise for neighbors. The Montana Department of Transportation sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience.
  • All traffic will continue to be shifted to the east side of Van Buren, including cyclist and pedestrian access. Sound wall installation is now ongoing and should continue into September.
  • Beyond roundabout construction, a portion of the existing Interstate 90 bridge deck has been removed for sound wall installation. This will result in westbound Interstate 90 traffic being reduced to one lane with this configuration remaining in effect for the foreseeable future. August 13-17, 2018

  • Van Buren Street Interchange construction is currently progressing ahead of schedule. As a result, the eastbound exit ramp is anticipated to be reopened either Sunday, August 12 or Monday, August 13.
  • This was the last of all Interstate 90 ramp closures! We thank all for their patience as all roundabouts were constructed. Traffic impacts will be significantly reduced in the coming weeks.
  • Night work will begin Monday to complete storm drain work on the north end of Van Buren Street. Construction may generate additional noise for neighbors. The Montana Department of Transportation sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience.
  • All traffic will continue to be shifted to the east side of Van Buren, including cyclist and pedestrian access. Sound wall installation is now ongoing and should continue into September. Crews are currently at about 65 percent completion.
  • Beyond roundabout construction, a portion of the existing Interstate 90 bridge deck has been removed for sound wall installation.   • The final of the Interstate 90 ramp closures began Wednesday. This will affect eastbound traffic exiting I-90, exit 105. This closure will be effective through August 13. Drivers are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and to use alternative routes.
  • All traffic has been shifted to the east side of Van Buren, including cyclist and pedestrian access.
  • Sound wall installation is now ongoing and should continue into September.
  • Beyond roundabout construction, a portion of the existing Interstate 90 bridge deck will also be removed for sound wall installation.   • Van Buren Street Interchange construction is currently progressing ahead of schedule. As a result, the westbound on-ramp may be re-opened as soon as Wednesday, August 1. Drivers are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and to use alternative routes.
  • The final of the Interstate 90 ramp closures could also begin Wednesday. This will affect eastbound traffic exiting I-90, exit 105. This closure will be effective through August 13.
  • All traffic has been shifted to the east side of Van Buren, including cyclist and pedestrian access.
  • Sound wall installation is now ongoing and should continue into September.

  • Van Buren Street Interchange construction will continue with some night work July 16-20. The westbound on-ramp (exit 105) will be closed through August 3. Drivers are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and to use alternative routes.
  • All traffic will be shifted to the east side of Van Buren Street to newly poured concrete. Bicyclists and pedestrians will also be moved to the east.
  • Sound wall installation is now ongoing and should last for about a month.
  • Beyond roundabout construction, a portion of the existing Interstate 90 bridge deck will also be removed for sound wall installation. This will result in westbound Interstate 90 traffic being reduced to one lane with this configuration remaining in effect for the foreseeable future. Traffic will be slowed and drivers should anticipate additional travel time. Single lane traffic will be controlled by flaggers in both directions on Van Buren.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian traffic is currently detoured to the existing sidewalks lining the west side of Van Buren Street. As a result, pedestrian facilities remaining on the east side will be closed for the majority of the 2018 summer.

  • Van Buren Street Interchange construction will continue with some night work July 16-20. The westbound on-ramp (exit 105) will be closed through August 3. Drivers are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and to use alternative routes.
  • All traffic will be shifted to the east side of Van Buren Street to newly poured concrete. Bicyclists and pedestrians will also be moved to the east.
  • Sound wall installation is now ongoing and should last for about a month.
  • Beyond roundabout construction, a portion of the existing Interstate 90 bridge deck will also be removed for sound wall installation. This will result in westbound Interstate 90 traffic being reduced to one lane with this configuration remaining in effect for the foreseeable future. Traffic will be slowed and drivers should anticipate additional travel time. Single lane traffic will be controlled by flaggers in both directions on Van Buren.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian traffic is currently detoured to the existing sidewalks lining the west side of Van Buren Street. As a result, pedestrian facilities remaining on the east side will be closed for the majority of the 2018 summer.

April 16-20, 2018

  • The Montana Department of Transportation will begin roadway construction on the Van Buren Street Interchange beginning Monday, April 16.
  • Crews will be stripping topsoil and removing tree stumps this week. No major delays are anticipated and two-lane traffic will be maintained. Drivers are reminded to be alert for signage and are reminded that fines double when workers are present.
  • As a reminder, we will be hosting an open house for the project on Tuesday, April 17 from 3-7 p.m. at the Missoula Children's Theater. This project will have a significant impact in the Missoula community, and as such, the Montana Department of Transportation will be hosting an open house where you can learn more about the project, see renderings, and review plans for traffic control – including public transportation and trail connections. Team members from Montana Department of Transportation will be on-hand to answer questions and share how this project is creating a safer flow of traffic.
