Proposed Project On Highway 287 North Of Augusta

Augusta, Montana (January 8, 2021) The Montana Department of
Transportation (MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to
comment on a proposal to rebuild about 9 miles of Highway 287, north
of Augusta. The project begins at the Pishkun Canal Bridge, at
reference post 47.0, and extends northeast for 9.0 miles ending at
reference post 56.0.

Proposed work includes widening Hwy 287 to a
28-foot top width (12-ft lanes, 2-foot shoulders), providing more
passing sight distance, improving the roadway alignment, grading
wider ditches, adding shoulder and centerline rumble strips,
constructing new snow fences, and updating signs and pavement
markings. The purpose of this project is to extend the life of the
roadway and reduce the potential occurrence and severity of crashes.

Construction is planned beyond 2027, depending on completion of
design and availability of funds. New right-of-way and relocation of
utilities will be required. MDT staff will contact all affected
landowners prior to doing survey work on their land. Staff will again
contact landowners prior to construction regarding property
acquisition and temporary construction permits.

An important part of
properly planning for future projects is partnering with the
community. The Montana Department of Transportation welcomes the
public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project.
