Traffic Safety Programs

Traffic Enforcement

Enforcement is one of the five “E’s” of traffic safety (education, enforcement, emergency services, engineering and evaluation). Law enforcement strategies are woven throughout all of MDT’s traffic safety goals including impaired driving, occupant protection, young drivers and motorcycle safety.

Speeding is also often related to traffic fatalities. A review of Montana STEP data shows that speed is the most frequently addressed traffic violation. During 2015 a total of 9,665 citations and warnings were issued for speed violations through the STEP program.

Our goal is:

  • Reduce speed-related fatalities 5% from the FFRY15 calendar base year average of 78 to 74 by 2020.
