Urban Area Crashes
Although rural crashes comprise the majority of fatal crashes in Montana, over 50 percent of Montana's total crashes occur in urban areas. And with increasing urbanization in the state, the proportion of fatal crashes in urban areas has increased steadily. This emphasis area's implementation efforts fall to the local governments, with support from MDT. Through the development of Community Transportation Safety Plans, local governments can identify and address safety issues unique to their area. These Community Transportation Safety Plans will coordinate with and approach safety in the same manner as the CHSP.
- Reduce the five-year average number of fatalities and incapacitating injuries resulting from crashes occurring in urban areas from 306 in 2010 to 269 by 2015.
- Reduce the annual urban fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled from 0.43 in 2010 to 0.33 by 2015.
