Traffic Safety Resource Officer

Trooper Kurt SagerTrooper Kurt Sager has served as MDT’s contracted Traffic Safety Resource Officer (TSRO) since March 2009. His major responsibilities entail the coordination and delivery of Standard Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE), and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) training programs statewide. He also coordinates the schedule of the MIDAC.

During FFY 2011, the TSRO conducted or participated in 30 training sessions, including multiple SFST refresher trainings with wet labs, several ARIDE trainings, two student DRE schools plus DRE field certifications in Arizona, one instructor DRE school, and a presentation at the Judges Fall 2011 conference.

In addition, Trooper Sager serves on the CHSP Team that focuses on the reduction of alcohol– and drug-impaired crashes, and actively participates in the Annual Meeting and activities to improve traffic safety.

The position description for the Montana State TSRO has been borrowed by other states seeking to devote an officer to SFST standardization and DRE programs. Washington State Patrol has used the Montana TSRO position description to create an officer position dedicated to SFST trainings and standardizations.

During FFY 2011, MHP achieved a significant milestone on behalf of Montana: every Trooper and Sergeant in the Montana Highway Patrol has now received ARIDE training or is a certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

Montana is the first state in the country to achieve this milestone. The contracted Traffic Safety Resource Officer has played a pivotal role in bringing this about.
