Since the public open house in May 2023, the project team has been working behind the scenes to review public comments and evaluate the needs in this corridor. Design alternatives are being considered and a full analysis of these alternatives is expected to be complete by the end of February 2024.

Additional information will be provided as the project progresses. Anyone with questions, comments, or interested in receiving project updates, please email Kristine or call 406-207-4484.

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and the City of Bozeman, in cooperation with Montana State University (MSU), the Museum of the Rockies, and other stakeholders, have initiated a project to reconstruct Kagy Boulevard from South 19th Avenue to Willson Avenue.

The project is still in the early planning stages. Additional public engagement opportunities are planned for this spring and the Bozeman City Commission is scheduled to discuss the project in two Work Sessions (dates TBD) throughout that time.

South Bozeman is expected to experience significant growth as enrollment at MSU increases and additional housing is planned for the city. Kagy Boulevard is the primary east-west route in this area and will be expected to serve a large portion of the developing community.

The Kagy Blvd – S. 19th to Wilson project will correct the existing deficiencies in the corridor. Proposed improvements include the addition of sidewalks, high-quality bicycle infrastructure, and lighting where none currently exists and improved upon in the areas where they do. Intersections will be reconstructed with enhanced safety features and pavement will be fully replaced for the first time in the history of Kagy Boulevard. Stormwater management will be added to improve environmental quality.

The project will also consider adding additional vehicular capacity in an effort to serve projected growth with similar quality of service as Bozeman has experienced in the past.

Current Status

In December of 2023, $24,289,622 in Rural Surface Transportation Grant funding was secured to reconstruct and enhance safety features on Kagy Boulevard.

The project will reconstruct Kagy Boulevard from South 19th Avenue to South Willson Avenue, including two travel lanes in each direction, turning lanes, a separated 10-foot-wide shared-use path on both sides of the roadway, landscaping and street lighting, roundabouts, pedestrian grade-separated and at-grade crossings, and signal modifications. Intersection improvements include two multi-lane roundabouts: one at the South 11th Avenue intersection and another at the South 7th Avenue intersection, and signal improvements at the South Willson Avenue intersection.

The following typical sections illustrate recommended multi-lane design concepts for South 19th Avenue to 11th Avenue and South 11th Avenue to Willson Avenue. These renderings are conceptual and subject to change as the project progresses.

Although funding has been secured, this project is still in the design phase and all recommendations must be approved before construction can begin. A timeline for construction has not been set.
