Meet Justin Schindler, Section Supervisor at MDT's Maintenance Division in Busby. Justin was born in Crow Agency Montana and grew up on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation where he is an Enrolled Tribal Member. After completing 2 years at Miles Community College, Justin applied for an opening at the Department of Transportation. "I thought plowing snow might be interesting," he reports. "I've been hooked ever since," he finishes with a grin.

In the 15 years Justin has worked for MDT, he has helped keep Montana's roadways safe. That fact fills him with pride and a very real sense of accomplishment. "Being able to stay in my community and work for the people that live here and travel these highways brings me a lot of pride." he says.

What's a typical day in the life of a Section Supervisor? At least some of Justin's time is spent driving roadways looking for safety hazards. "We maintain the road in our section: fixing signs and delineators that are faded or missing; patching potholes; repairing guard rails and other safety mechanisms; and of course plowing and sanding the highway in the winter months." As Section Supervisor, Justin is concerned with completing the work in the safest, most professional and economical way possible.

We asked Justin what he felt was the most important quality needed for the job. "Self-confidence," he said without hesitating.

What does Justin like best about the job? For starters, the relationships formed with colleagues: "The people I get to work with become great friends—most of them, for life." But perhaps the best part of his job is the rewarding feeling he gets helping people. "There are always moments when a member of the traveling public gives you that special thanks and a pat on the back. It’s a great feeling."
