Meet Florence 'Flo' Griffith, Lab Supervisor, crossword puzzler and cook.
Flo was born in Lewistown and spent her childhood in communities at the foothills of Montana's picturesque Snowy Mountains. She attended highschool in nearby Grass Range before marrying her husband, Lewie. Flo worked a variety of jobs before coming to work for MDT. "I worked in a general store, in cafes as a cook, and as a substitute teacher in the local school." In 1990, she took a temporary position in the lab at MDT; a step that headed her in the general direction of a major promotion. In 1996, she became a permanent employee and in 2004, she became Lab Supervisor. Flo manages a full caseload and supervises two technicians. She explains, "Together we perform a variety of tests on gravel, soils and asphalt. The tests are done here in the lab or in field test trailers." As supervisor, Flo interacts with laboratory staff, construction crews and contractors. Staying in touch with her contacts is an important part of the job. According to Flo, "the most important qualities needed for this position are to be able to get along with different types of people and to be a good communicator." In addition to the lab work, Flo is also active in MDT's Transportation Enhancement Program (TAP) and serves on a steering committee that provides direction for the implementation of software designed to streamline and facilitate the flow of information, including lab results. What does Flo like best about working for MDT? "I really enjoy my job and the people here at MDT. I feel proud when I look at a finished project and know I helped to provide a service to MDT and the traveling public." |
