All new products must be submitted to MDT for evaluation on a Request Form. The form and product information are mailed to: Montana Department of Transportation, Materials Bureau, Quality Control Section, P.O. Box 201001, Helena, Montana, 59620-1001 or . The packet of information is forwarded to a committee for a decision to be made on what actions are taken; rejection or sent to a subcommittee. A subcommittee of experts looks at the supplied information and makes a decision to except the product or reject it.
Processing Time
Processing time varies with the type of product and the Department workload. Product evaluation can take longer if changes to the existing specifications—or new specifications—are necessary.
Rejection
A product may be rejected if it does not meet our specifications or if MDT does not see a need for the product.
Resubmitting a product
A product rejected because it did not meet specifications can be resubmitted after it is changed to meet specifications and Department concerns have been addressed. An explanation of the changes must be sent along with a new request form.
Buy America Requirements
Steel or iron products must meet Buy America requirements as listed in the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, Subsection 106.09 "Domestic Materials" and corresponding Supplemental Specifications.
The necessary Buy America documentation is described in Form 406 Certification of Compliance - Misc Steel and Iron. This documentation is required for each project when the product is used.
